Selfie - “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website”-  has been selected as the English word of the year by an unanimous jury from Oxford Dictionaries. The word can be traced as far back as 2002, but the rate of usage on the Web has increased by 17,000 percent since the beginning of this year.

”Nothing less than a disaster.” These were the words from Poul Erik Skov Christensen, chairman of the Danish trade union 3F, when it seemed that 5,200 of their members would lose their unemployment compensation.
